New Covid-19 Cases in Indonesia Over 1,000 Four Days In a row

The surge in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia occurred along with the emergence of new variants of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5.

The Covid-19 Handling Task Force reported that from June 15 to June 18 2022, there were consistent daily additions of Covid-19 cases above 1,000 cases. The details; June 15 added 1,242 Covid-19 cases in a day, June 16 1,173, June 17 1,220, and June 18 added 1,264.

Government Spokesperson for Handling Covid-19 Reisa Broto Asmoro said the spike in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia occurred in line with the emergence of a new variant that was included in the variant of concern category.

Prior to the significant addition of cases, the government announced the detection of cases of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants in Indonesia.

"Regarding whether this subvariance can cause a spike in cases again, we should examine the experience or facts that occurred in Indonesia from previous years," said Reisa on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, Friday (17/6/2022).

"The increase in cases in Indonesia always occurs simultaneously with the emergence of new variants, including variants of concern," added Reisa.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) Mohammad Syahril said that the current increase in cases was influenced by the new subvariants, namely BA.4 and BA.5. (setpres, between)
