The summit is part of US efforts to counter China's growing power in the ASEAN region.
President Jokowi next week is scheduled to leave for Washington DC, United States. Jokowi will attend the US-ASEAN Special Summit on 12-13 May 2022. This is the 10th summit, the previous two summits were held virtually due to the pandemic.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who is currently in New York, reported Jokowi's planned visit via her Twitter account.
"Video conference to prepare President Jokowi's visit to Washington DC next week for the ASEAN-US Special Summit," Retno said in a tweet quoted on Saturday (7/5).
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the same thing on its social media account. "The President of the Republic of Indonesia will attend the ASEAN-US Special Summit in Washington DC, 12-13 May 2022," he said.
Citing Reuters, the summit is part of US efforts to counter China's growing power in the ASEAN region.
According to the original schedule, the summit was held at the end of March, but was postponed because several ASEAN member leaders were unable to attend on the date set by the US.
Meanwhile, on April 16, 2022, the White House on its website announced that President Joe Biden would host the US-ASEAN Special Summit attended by ASEAN leaders from May 12-13, 2022.
