Minister Checks Indonesian Satellite Manufacturing at Boeing and SpaceX

Satellites are needed for high-speed internet in frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) areas.

Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo) Johnny G Plate visited the satellite maker Boeing, SpaceX, and Hughes Network System in the United States (US).

The visit of the Minister of Communication and Information and his entourage to check the progress of making Indonesian satellites in the US.

Boeing is a satellite manufacturing company for the Hot Backup Satellite (HBS) project. Meanwhile, SpaceX is the provider of rocket launchers for the HBS.

Then, Hughes Network System provides broadband solutions for satellites with High Throughput Satellite (HTS) technology used by HBS.

HBS is a backup satellite. The goal is as an alternative if something happens to the Satria-1 Satellite, which is scheduled to launch in June 2023.

Because the launch of the Satria 1 Satellite is very risky, such as falling. Meanwhile, satellite is needed to reach remote areas that are difficult to reach by internet.

“HBS was chosen in order to provide backup support to mitigate any risks that might occur to the Satria-1 Satellite. In addition to having the main function as a backup, the provision of HBS aims to increase internet speed and improve user experience," said Director of Telecommunication and Information Accessibility (Bakti) of the Ministry of Communications and Informatics Anang Latif, Monday (25/7).

Director General of SDPPI, Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Ismail, explained that satellite technology is the most appropriate choice to overcome the problem of equal distribution of internet access in Indonesia.

“With satellite, remote points can be reached relatively easily and evenly. Satellite technology complements various signal and internet access infrastructures that have been built by Kominfo, such as high-speed internet backbone networks and thousands of internet towers or 4G BTS in the leading, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) areas," he said.
