The world faces severe challenges of food security, energy security, and financial stability that are increasingly difficult.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) invites all countries to act immediately so that decades of development are not lost.
Jokowi said that currently the world is facing very tough challenges, both the challenges of food security, energy security, and also increasingly difficult financial stability.
This year's world economic growth has also decreased by one percent to 2.6 percent and the achievement of the SDGs has been significantly delayed. "We must act now so that there will not be a lost decade of development," said Jokowi during a virtual speech at the side event of the BRICS High Level Dialogue on Global Development Summit, Friday (24/6).
Jokowi also proposed three steps that must be carried out together. The first is synergy to overcome emerging challenges. As President of the G20 and part of the Global Crisis Response Group, he said, Indonesia will continue to contribute to overcoming various problems of food security, energy, and financial stability.
“I noted many other initiatives from various parties. The various existing initiatives must synergize and strengthen each other. We must take into account the voices of developing countries, we must prioritize dialogue," he said.
Second, the President encourages all countries to strengthen global partnerships for the SDGs with a focus on development funding. Jokowi emphasized that the SDGs funding gap, which increased from US$2.5 trillion per year before the pandemic to US$4.2 trillion per year after the pandemic, must be closed immediately.
He considered that innovative funding must be promoted, especially the role of the private sector must be strengthened. "BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) must be a catalyst for strengthening investment in developing countries," he said.
Jokowi said similar efforts were also made by the Indonesian G20 Presidency to encourage investment that creates added value for developing countries. He also hopes that the Global Development Initiative (GDI) can be a catalyst for achieving the SDGs.
"I encourage the alignment of GDI with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific in which the element of achieving the SDGs is one of the spirits and priorities of cooperation," said Jokowi.
Third, Jokowi also encourages the strengthening of new sources of growth. According to him, BRICS cooperation with partner countries must support inclusive digital transformation, development of green industries and green infrastructure, and strengthening access of developing countries to global supply chains.
