FAO and IRRI Admit Indonesia's Food Security is Tough During World Crisis

IRRI assesses that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency because it is able to meet the needs of the community more than 20 percent.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) stated that the food security system in Indonesia is resilient in the midst of the food crisis and geopolitical tensions that have rocked the world.

For this achievement, Indonesia won a food security award from the International Rice Research Institute.

The award was directly given by the Director General of IRRI Jean Balie to President Joko Widodo at the State Palace, Sunday (14/8/2022).

"This is a very big achievement, as evidenced by a high-level agri-food system, food security, not only rice but also other commodities, especially in the midst of geopolitical tensions," said Jean Balie at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

Jean Balie added that during the pandemic, which greatly affected various countries, Indonesia managed to increase the level of rice productivity and achieved a high level of self-sufficiency.

IRRI assesses that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency because it is able to meet the needs of the community more than 20 percent.

Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, national rice production from 2019 was consistently at the level of 31.3 million tons, meeting the national rice needs of 30 million tons per year. Based on BPS calculations, the final stock of rice in April 2022 was the highest at 10.2 million tons.

"This is the result of high technology adoption, good farmer training, as well as excellent extension performance and excellent cooperation between agencies and especially between IRRI and the Indonesian government," said Jean.

The same thing was conveyed by FAO for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Rajendra Aryal, who assessed that IRRI to the Indonesian government was a great achievement, especially regarding rice self-sufficiency in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical situation.

"I would say that this is a great achievement that Indonesia has achieved because we have seen almost no rice imports except for the premium varieties. Corn imports have also stabilized, so I would say that this is a great achievement and it is a major milestone towards the agri-food system. tough in this country," said Rajendra Aryal.
